North Beach is one of the most iconic neighborhoods in San Francisco. The legacy of the infamous Barbary Coast in the late 19th and early 20th century, can be seen in North Beach today with its many adult entertainment establishments. In the background of this image you can see the legendary “City Lights Booksellers and Publishers” founded by the recently deceased poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti who was a key figure in the rise of the counter culture “Beat Movement” in the 1950’s.
